Northwest Alabama Arts Council, Inc.
The Northwest Alabama Arts Council (NWAAC)
is a non-profit, volunteer organization which promotes and cultivates
a cultural and social atmosphere where the arts can flourish by
promoting area artists and showcase the creative spirit of Northwest
Alabamians; by providing an esteemed and reputable gallery exhibit
for artists wishing to build a resume; by providing a venue for
the art education of area children through experiment stations,
visiting artists, childrens exhibits and summer art camps;
to explore and promote Reflections of the South within
our communities and present that to our local residents, as well
as those we hope to attract from outside our region and the State.
The counties represented are - Franklin, Lamar, Marion,
and Winston. These areas have within their regions the following
communities:
Franklin, Lamar, Marion and Winston Counties - including
Bear Creek, Beaverton, Brilliant, Detroit, Double Springs,Guin,Hackleburg,
Haleyville, Hamilton, Millport, Phil Campbell, Red Bay, Russellville,
Sulligent,Vernon,Vina and Winfield; all city schools; Bevill State
CC & Northwest AL CC.
The primary activity of the Council is the annual Jerry
Brown Arts Festival.
The NWAAC is supported by donations, memberships, and is funded
in part by the Alabama
State Council on the Arts.

Jerry Brown Arts Festival
Jerry Brown Arts Festival
- "Reflections of the South" - The JBAF
is a juried arts exhibit which educates the public on fine arts
and crafts and the artistswork. The JBAF provides
a venue for artists to showcase and sell their work. This festival
will significantly enhance the regions image as it grows.
This juried festival is supported in part, by funding from the Alabama
State Council on the Arts and is the only festival of its kind
in this four county region.
The JBAF draws artists from local communities as
well as from far away as Alaska. It features pottery, fine art paintings
and drawings, sculpture, fabric art, wooden craft, blacksmithing,
broom-making, and other art forms and crafts. All art displayed
at the JBAFis hand-made. No commercial kits are allowed
at this juried festival.
The JBAF is named in honor of local artist and potter,
Jerry
Brown, a 9th-generation potter who has been awarded a National
Endowment of the Arts Fellowship, as well as the Alabama State Heritage
Award from the State Arts Council. His work is housed in the Smithsonian,
and in galleries across the globe. He is best known for his unique
double face-jugs, and for having one of the last surviving mule-powered
pug mills still extant.
The JBAF is held annually the first weekend of March.

Mayfest (Guin)
The Annual
Mayfest festival, in Guin, AL, is a much anticipated event.
Entering its 11th year, Mayfest plays host to several fun events.
Held, in 2005, on May 14, it is an event you'll be sure to want
to attend.
Activities:

Productions - Southern Gospel Concert with the Crabb Family,
Gold City, and the Talley Trio. This event is emceed by Shannon
Knight.

The Salvation Army is a non-profit organization providing a local
thrift store and assistance for families. The store which accepts
donated items such as food, clothing, furniture, books and other
items is open to all customers. Those who are considered to be low
income, or who are in an emergency situation, are eligible to receive
free items.

Santas Workshop is a non-profit organization founded 15 years
ago for the purpose of providing clothing and toys for children
birth through high school to children of need (eligibility approved
by DHR) to all children served by the Guin Schools. Food is given
to the parents, as well as to elderly families who are in need.
About 100 children and 75 families are served at Christmas time
through this program. All workers are volunteers, and several hundred
in the community are involved in some way to make the event successful!
